Date: Sat 13 Jul 2019, All Day – Your guide is a British Cycling Leadership Tutor, with 20 years MTB experience on Exmoor, with the ability to tie up the very best trails on Exmoor, for you to enjoy, taking in natural trails, as used in some of the local Enduro races, as well as some manmade and natural hidden gems. With a 6 seater van, pick up truck and a custom bike trailer, we’ll meet in Porlock Weir, then head up onto the moors, aiming for at least 7 uplifts throughout the day (usually 8 or 9) taking in roughly 30-45km of trails. This is a guiding day for experienced riders, with all their own equipment and a fully functioning mountain bike (recommended full suspension). If you’re unsure whether this is for you, please get in touch. Snacks and hot drinks will be available, as well as hot pasties for lunch. The day will finish with a descent into Porlock Weir, where you can clean your bikes down with Fenwick’s Ltd products, before heading home. Maximum of 8 riders per day. Cost: Only £80pp for this full day, bespoke experience, with guiding, snacks, hot pastie, drinks and uplifts included. Ages 18+

Exmoor Adventures

Bike and Climb Activity Day

Date: Sun 21 Apr 2019, This activity day will include the following activities which are suitable for active individuals, couples or groups who want to have a action-packed outdoor experience on Exmoor. All the equipment is provided, so all that you need is the desire and enthusiasm to try something adventurous. Morning, 09:30 – 12:00: Rock Climbing & Abseiling at Valley of Rocks, Lynton. This really is a stunning location with great coastal views of the highest cliffs in England. The rock climbing is suitable for beginners and more advanced climbers with a range of easy climbs, through to harder climbs with overhangs to tackle. After a few climbs, we will abseil from the top of the rocks, enjoying the exposure of the location. We provide all the equipment including harnesses and helmets. Afternoon, 13:00 – 15:30: Guided Mountain Bike Ride – Doone Valley and moorland area. This is a very scenic mountain bike route which takes in the spectacular moorland scenery of Exmoor. You will have the chance to see Exmoor Ponies and Red Deer as well as other birds and wildlife. A good level of fitness is required as I grade this as an intermediate route with a couple of steep climbs and technical sections. Mountain bikes with front suspension and hydraulic disk brakes are provided as well as helmet and gloves. A fully qualified Mountain Bike Leader will guide you on this route, so all you need to do is enjoy the views and the fantastic Exmoor Bridleways. After all the activity, you’ll have the chance to enjoy a well deserved cream tea in Malmesmead. Ages – 18 or older Suitable for – Individuals, couples or small groups of friends This is a great chance to meet new people and enjoy the adventurous activities that Exmoor offers. Cost: £65pp

Date: Tue 23 Apr 2019, all day, Porlock, West Somerset – This 1 day course is perfect for those with limited map and compass skills, wanting to gain the fundamental skills and techniques to give more confidence on the hills, using map and compass. During the day, the following skills will be covered: Identifying & interpreting map features (scales, signs and symbols); Use a range of maps (1:25,000 & 1:50,000 OS); Setting the map using a compass & land features; Use of the grid system, and grid references; Planning a route; Undertaking a planned route (roughly 10 km); Use of pacing, handrails and timing; Introduction and use of taking a bearing on your compass. Exmoor’s woodland is part of the ‘temperate rainforest’—a rare and internationally important habitat found in western coastal and upland Britain. These forests, also known as Atlantic woodlands, are ideal habitats for lower plants including ferns, mosses and lichens. This walk will introduce you to the fern species found at Horner Woods. You will learn a method for identifying ferns and you will be shown key identifying features of the species you encounter. You will also get to find out about some of the other interesting plants and lichens that are special to this habitat. These include a focus onthe work conducted over the past 5 years in the remarkable medieval town of Dunster as part of Time Team’s Dig Village Project. Prehistoric interest will be represented by a review of the Mesolithic research focussed at Hawkcombe Head and Farley Hill and the results of a recent study of the prehistoric landscape around Lee Abbey. We will have an update of the historic environment work undertaken as part of the Exmoor Mires Partnership and look at research and conservation of some of our most recent historic assets:our traditional signposts. Small scale conservation projects undertaken by the National Park will be featured such work at the Incline Winding House and on-going condition surveys as well our rapid coastal zone assessment survey. This is a great 1 day course to introduce kayak and canoe skills on flat water. An ideal candidate may be trying paddle-sport for the first time or have some previous experience.
