Date: Sat 16 Mar 2019 10:30am-1:30pm, Follow signs out of Minehead to North Hill, ascend North Hill along Hill Rd, follow road until you get to a dead end, this is the car park and meeting point of your walk. Alan, walk leader will meet you here for a fascinating tour of North Hill, taking in glorious scenery and historical sites. Porlock Spring Showporlock-spring-show

Floral classes include narcissus, early spring shrubs, and other seasonal flowers. There are decorative and cookery classes, classes for homemade drink, and classes specifically for children including a display of artwork from the children of St Dubricius School. There really is plenty for everyone to see and admire! There are also plant sales, a book stall, a raffle and homemade refreshments. It is one of the earliest shows in the area and a must for anyone looking for inspiration for their home or garden. No need to book – just turn up.

An opportunity to look around the historic, water-powered sawmill and estate workshops at Simonsbath. Dating from the early 19th century, this group of buildings, set in a beautiful, riverside location in the heart of the national park, were once the hub of activity for a huge country estate. Volunteers lead regular tours of the mill and will tell you about the history of this remarkable area. Tours are free (donations to help conservation works are welcome), and no booking is necessary but if you are coming especially to see the mill it’s advisable to ring 01643 831202 on the day to check that we are open. Woodland Walk and Rapid Woodland Assessment at Horner Woodshorner woods

Come and learn about Exmoor’s Atlantic woodland habitat and how Plantlife, Exmoor National Park and the National Trust are working together to conserve woodlands like Horner. On our walk you will have a chance to carry out a Rapid Woodland Assessment (RWA). This is an easy-to-use tool that has been developed specially for volunteers and will help us understand the condition of woods across the south west and identify those which have potential to support rare lichens, mosses and liverworts. By taking part you will find out what lichens, mosses and liverworts need to thrive, and the threats that they face. Afterwards you will be able to carry out Rapid Woodland Assessments independently if you choose to volunteer as part of Plantlife’s project, Building Resilience in South West Woodlands. Snowdrop Valley is open for its annual display of beautiful flowers, heralding the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Park in the village and walk or take the bus to see the snowdrops. Afterwards visit Snowdrop Café or one of the other establishments in the village to enjoy tea and cake, and don’t forget to take your souvenirs home with you. Buses operate a Park and Ride service from 9 to 24 Feb. There are 5 different walks of varying difficulty to access the valley, and Walking Maps are available of each route. The ever popular West Somerset Railway carol trains are hauled by heritage steam locomotives, recreating Christmas gone by. They start at Bishops Lydeard or Minehead and are a return journey to Williton. We advise you to arrive at 18:30 so you can admire the locomotives in steam, waiting patiently by the station and the band warming up. The train will depart at 19:00 once all of the passengers are on board and begin its musical journey in to the night. Please bring a torch as it will be wonderfully dark. We’ll take you on one of our classic Exmoor routes, which takes you through ancient wooded valleys, along beautiful rivers, over open moorland and down fun, fast single track. A good level of fitness is required for this activity. We provide: Quality mountain bikes, helmets and gloves. You need: Active clothing, trainers and a back pack with water and snacks. What do we do? We show you the basics, as well as teaching you the fundamental MTB skills. Level 1 Mountain Bike Skills

Dates: Sun 4 Nov 2018, Horner, Exmoor – This course is designed for riders who have limited off road experience. We go through all the basics from pre ride checks and bike set up, through to correct gear selection, tackling rough and rocky terrain as well as learning wheel lifts, track stands and much more. The course includes: Pre-ride bike checks; Bike set up; Route/line Choice; Spares & equipment to carry; Correct gear selection; Ready/attack position; Technical ascending/descending; Tackling mud, gravel, rocks; Track stands; Front wheel lifts; Cone of movement; Basic trail-side repairs; Puncture repair. Using the grade I/II section of the River Barle, you will be taught a range of skills and techniques by a qualified BCU kayak coach. Course content includes: Equipment, clothing and safety; Use of high/low brace support strokes; Ferry gliding; Breaking in/out of the flow; Reading white water; Running rapids; Use of throw lines; How to deal with a swim on moving water. Pinkery Pond lies in the high moorlands of Exmoor National Park; the highest artificial lake in southern England. It was created by the construction of a huge earth dam designed to block the River Barle. It was made some 200 years ago for John Knight; the wealthy ironmaster who’d bought much of the moorlands. So why was it built? Dr Graham Wills’ talk will explore the intriguing history of the pond and examine the various theories about its intended function. No need to book – just turn up.
